The goal is not “name the strangest thing.” It is “name the least obvious thing you are still confident fits.” Use the clock to move one or two rungs past your first thought.
Build three rungs
Recall an obvious, a specific and a deep-but-safe answer.
Choose certainty
Drop any answer that only “sort of” fits the prompt.
Type cleanly
Leave enough time for spelling and submission.
The rarity ladder
Think in three candidates, not one
Your first answer is useful—it establishes the common end of the ladder. Do not discard it immediately. Add one more specific candidate and one less familiar candidate, then choose the deepest option whose category fit and spelling still feel secure.

Choose the safe deep answer
Rarity is valuable only after acceptance. When the prompt is narrow, a clear 60-point answer can be stronger than an edge case that might miss. Save ambitious picks for broad prompts where you can prove the category fit in one sentence.
Use reveal pages as training, not a script
After a round, inspect the prompt page and compare your first thought with the 60-, 85- and 100-point lists. Look for patterns in how you could have moved one rung deeper. The next prompt will be different, but the recall habit transfers.
